Let yourself be carried away by the magic of the place
The guided tour of the Mas d’Azil cave lasts around 1 hour.
Plunge into the cave and be guided in your discovery of the life of our prehistoric ancestors. The collections of animal bones (woolly mammoth, rhinocerous, cave bears…) are testament to life in the Mas d’Azil cave and in the cohabitation of humans and animals. NEW 2017:
During summer 2 visits are in English at 9:45am and 1pm from July 9th to August 31st
Complete your visit with free entry to the Prehistory Museum in Mas d’Azil.
This museum, located in the village, is the only Prehistory Museum in the department. Discover here the modernism and the skills of the occupants of the cave through the items they left behind.
Among the famous museum pieces, you can admire a reproduction of the well-known decorated throwing stick called the ‘Faon aux oiseaux’ (fawn with birds), considered to be one of the masterpieces of Palaeolithic art.
Other high points of the visit include the only human remains of the cave, a Magdalenian skull, displayed alongside its scientific reconstruction and a presentation of the Azilian era through the microliths and painted pebbles so typical of Mas d’Azil.
An impressive natural site
The Mas d’Azil cave will surprise you by its immensity, its volume and its geographical location.
Both the Arize river and the road pass through the cave, making it a remarkable geographical curiosity.
